Depth of field is when you have a f stop value and the value could be something like F/1.8 and that would mean that only the object directly in front of it will be in focus but the background will be blurred. On the other hand if the value was on the other end of the spectrum then-the background and the object in front would be in focus.
You can also see from the picture above that the higher the value of the f stop the more in focus and the other picture shows a example of both ends of the spectrum one of the image has the flower completely in focus and the background in focus and the other one just has the flower in focus.
