“To the complaint, 'There are no people in these photographs,' I respond, There are always two people: the photographer and the viewer.”
― Ansel Adams
statement of intent
The theme of my project is different landscapes, which I will compare and contrast. I intend to try and capture different landscapes by looking at both urban and seascapes and taking images at different times of the day and different times of the year.
I will start by looking at artist research and photographers who capture landscape in different ways, images from different perspective will help me when I go to take photographs related to my theme.
To do this I will have to take photographs in different locations in order to collect different images to compare and show contrast. My initial ideas of landscape was images of fields and countryside however after my research I realized buildings and cityscapes also came under the theme landscape.
To show my progression through at the project I will start by taking photographs outside of school and in different areas I will be going to Angelesey and London as I feel this will show a big contrast of landscape.
For my initial research I am going to research three photographers, these are going to be Berenice A Abbott because I like the way she frame her shots and how they are in black and white, Aaron Siskind why because of how she does close ups of buildings details.
my last and third person is Legan Rooster the reason why I like his work is because of the way that he cuts out part of pictures and puts them together in one image. to

In this image I can see a wave of water crashing against the sea rocks. This image is relevant to my work. I also like this work because of the different cut outs.
Comment
I really like the format of the photo which is portrait because it makes you focus more on the diamond shape. I also like the hue that has been applied to the image which gives it a greeny blue tint which also enhances the white of the wave and the black of the rocks. I think i might try and use some of these techniques in my own work, I would like to try changing the colour on some of my images. The cuts in the image would make the younger people more interested in the photo it also makes the photo more appealing to the eye and it also make it stand out from the crowd.
- The focal point in the picture is the collage section in the middle which breaks up the composition and makes the photo very interesting .
- There are strong leading lines which are created by the way the photograph has been cut up. The lines have flipped sections of the image around and white lines have been drawn on top to bring out these different sections.
- There is a contrast between the white of the water and the black of the background which makes the cut sections pop out.
- The cut out section seems to be right in the foreground of the image and so it appears to be large in scale and dominated the image .
- The depth of field is quite deep because i can see the details of the waves and the background

I am going to start my Landscape project by going to Anglesey in February, to capture the mood, weather and atmosphere of a winter landscape

worst image
This is my worst images because it is over exposed meaning that there is too much light being let in to the shutter. It is also out of focus meaning the image has a blurred effect.
best image
This image is my best image because it shows the rule of thirds clear as I focused on the rock in the center and the two cliff on each side. I have used the correct exposure and I have used a large depth of field as I wanted everything to be ion focus.

compare and contrast
I am now going to change locations so that I can compare and contrast different types of landscapes, looking at an urban setting which is completely different to the seascape of Angelsey. I hope to capture different lighting, compositions and view points and then from this decide which landscape I want to develop for my final outcomes.

In this image I can see large pane of glass with the reflection of the door.
I can also see a big white door. You may also be able to see some chairs in the corner because of its black and white filter. There are lines in ceiling. The long leading lines bring your eyes to the door. In my opinion I think this image was photographed quite recently because of the pane of glass near the window and the structure of the ceiling. The image was photographed in black and white to make the door more contrasting to the chairs and to the window. I think that this image was photographed in NEW YORK in a modern office. The door was purposefully placed on the power spot where your eyes would naturally go to. The door would of been made out of wood and painted highly in gloss as we can see some sort of reflection init. In this image there are no people, that would make the viewer concentrate on the door and the strong leading lines in contrast to this the chairs also stand out because of the curved lines on the back of the chair. This image was taken out of a section of a office.
Composition
The focus point of this image is the door which is in the power spot. This was taken at eye level view to make the door seem more box-like and also to make it more taller. The lighting helps to bring out more of the whites and make them appear brighter in the image and makes the blacks more darker because of the shadows, this also helps with making a clearer reflection on the pane of glass. The use of the light and dark photography helps with the hard lines of the door and the mirror. The photographer has framed the photo in a way that the door is perfectly on the power spot which shows that they have used the rule of thirds. The door has been also framed in a way that makes it seem bigger than everything else in the room, for example: the chair appears tiny in comparison to everything else. The photographer has also used a smaller depth of field to get all the background in focus. The photographers choice of lens is wide angled and we know this because of how the chairs are in the frame.
Context
This image was taken in the day. This was taken at eye level. The makes me think of sadness and depression. I think that the reason the photographer has taken the photo is because he/she is showing how a plain but simple photo can show a lot more than a more detailed photo sometimes.
Connection
This photo connects to my work because I have been taking pictures of reflection and this image has reflections of the mirror on the door. In some of my work I have used straight leading lines from their type of photos however I have only taken some work further with the theme light and dark. In my opinion the message behind this image is that some images don't need lots of detail and without that detail can appear simple yet elegant. I think the reason why it has been taken in black and white is because it makes the sleek lines of the mirror and the door stand out. In the future I feel as though I will be using this black and white technique to further make my work more intriguing.
Comment
I really like how the door in the image has nice border line shadows next to it and this helps the door look more bold, on the ground next to the door you can see the white reflection which further builds the doors physique. All in all the image is thought provoking however further use of lighting could have improved the reflection in the mirror adding more detail. This image would inspire me to use the light and dark effect on more of my images. I think that the meaning behind the image is the stark world of business, it creates a sense of industry and power.

photo shoot in london
I have been to Anglesey in February and I have been given the opportunity to go to London in the summer, this will allow me to compare and contrast different landscapes. When I was in Anglesey I focused on capturing big landscapes as well as close ups. When I go to London I am going to do the same thing, focusing on detail as well as big city landscapes. I hope to make progress with my project by manipulating my images in photoshop to improve my outcomes.

In this photograph I can see lots of arch ways which reminds me of the structure of a bridge. The picture is in black and white which to me creates a spooky effect.
This image is a section of a building I think it was taken in a train station as there are also people in the image, this also show scale in the size of the structure.
the strong leading line are the poles and also the one in the front is where my eyes goes to and where i consentrates .
the gas in the background gives the more of a spooky effect and it would make it feel like there is a train or something there.
The focus point is the main iron structure just off the centre of the picture. your eye is drawn to it as the black girders contrast against the pale background. The image composition is made up from lots of leading lines from the metal work that stand out against the light that comes in. The photographer has used the rule of thirds in the top right hand corner with hte main girder cross section and the roof structure makes the viewer almost "look up"at the image. There is a fantastic sense of scale created by the small people in the the foreground against the towering structure this makes the image seem very grand and impressive there is a deep depth of field, where everything is in four but there is what looks like smoke in the background which softens the image.
The main competition affect is achieved through the contrast of black and white. In my opinion I really like this image becuase it is simple but elegant.

DEVELOPING
After looking at different photographers I have decided to look at Legan Rooster because his work inspires me. What I really admire about his work is the way he cuts out sections of the photograph and rearranges them to create interesting compositions. The way he has done this is by using layers in Photoshop and cropping tool. I am going to going to link my work to his by manipulating my own images in Photoshop using his technique. I am going to develop my work further by exploring this method with my London urban photos because I think this will give me some good outcomes.

EVALUATION
The theme of the project was landscape, originally I thought that it was pictures in landscape as in the sideways picture or something like cityscapes and mountains or something to do with nature. It was really enjoyable especially when I got to go to different parts of England and capture the world in different ways. What was really important was to capture the different landscapes at different times of the year because the light is different and this is something that is important to photographers. The part of the project I enjoyed the most was being able to go to different locations to capture my images as I really enjoy using the camera, especially in manual mode. I hope to carry on studying photography next year inspired by my GCSE course and will enjoy developing my skills further. The new techniques I have experienced on this project have mainly been my development in Photoshop, using different layers, filters and tools. I have been able to learn how to double layer to create a blurred affect which I think extends my outcomes and I have also learnt how to cut parts of my images to make a collage that is similar to the artists that I have researched on. The photographers that influenced me the most were Legan Rooster and Nicholas Godden and I use their work to help me develop my own images which I think have been successful but I have extended the outcome by adding different filters and multi layers.
Throughout my journey I think that the greatest outcome was the Photoshop end products as I feel that I had the most control over what I wanted them to look like and they looked the most professional. If I were to this theme again I would start by going to more places and build portfolio with more images and develop my photos further with three or more attempt of the same shoot to get more detailed or more professional in case I make a mistake then I will be able to back track and redo images.
